Two Russian billionaires who once impressed legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson are now competing to take over control of Manchester United.
Alexei Fedorichev and Boris Rotenberg have both signaled their interest in buying the Premier League club from the Glazer family. Both men met Ferguson years ago and earned praise from the Scot for their passion for football.
Fedorichev, who has an estimated net worth of $6.2 billion from the gas and transport industries, dined with Ferguson in Moscow in 2008. According to reports, Fedorichev grilled Ferguson for insights about leadership and running a football club.
Meanwhile, Rotenberg has an estimated fortune of $1.1 billion built in the oil and gas sector. He met Ferguson at a UEFA Champions League match in Moscow in 2015. Rotenberg reportedly discussed tactics and coaching with the United boss.
Buying Manchester United would represent the crowning glory for two phenomenally rich Russians who seem desperate for football legitimacy.
However, there are potential issues with Fedorichev and Rotenberg taking over at Old Trafford. Both have links to Vladimir Putin’s regime that could draw scrutiny during any takeover attempt.
But with the Glazers signaling their willingness to sell a portion or even all of United’s shares, an offer from Russia may be seriously considered.
Fedorichev and Rotenberg have the resources to return United to the top of the English and European game. Yet their close ties to Putin could make their interest complicated and controversial.
